Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a blackhead, breakouts and acne?
Blackheads occur when we have oil coming through and can create a little plug at the top of the follicle. Thankfully, in the hands of a professional, we can extract them safely and effectively.
A breakout is often a small pustule (whitehead) that’s developed when our sebaceous glands become clogged and infected. This leads to those uncomfortable, red and swollen lesions we’ve all experienced.
Acne on the other hand, is a chronic skin condition that affects both the skin’s hair follicles and oil glands. A much deeper skin condition, acne occurs too far away from the skin’s surface to be pushed up and out (like our breakouts), so it requires holistic care to treat and manage.
What is Rosacea and why might I be experiencing it?
Redness and rosacea are conditions where your facial blood vessels are enlarged, giving your cheeks, nose and chin a more flushed appearance.
Genetics play a large role in the proneness of rosacea with lighted skin types more susceptible.
Diet can trigger flare ups in rosacea and redness such as consumption of spicy foods and alcohol.
Weather changes can contribute to rosacea and redness with cold temperatures increase sensitivity.
Skincare choices can trigger unwanted redness through poor (or lack thereof) prescription resulting in irritation.
What is skin dehydration and what causes it?
If you have a dehydrated skin condition, your skin is lacking water. It appears as a dull complexion, can be sensitive and irritated and has an increased appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
When skin is dehydrated, it creates more oil to make up for the missing water which if not managed, can lead to breakouts, irritation and dry patches on your skin.
Diet contributes to skin dehydration if we’re not nourishing our body with fresh produce.
External environment factors such as change in season and weather can provoke dehydration.
Lifestyle choices such as alcohol and caffeine consumption and smoking can deprive our skin of hydration.
What is an impaired barrier?
Any skin type can experience sensitivity with it commonly displaying as irritation, inflammation or redness. This sensitivity is often sign of an impaired barrier (the outer layer of your skin). When our barrier is impaired, it struggles to maintain the essential components of healthy skin and needs specific recovery focussed care.
What causes pigmentation?
Pigmentation can be caused hormonally and non-hormonally. Most commonly, pigmentation is caused by induced sun exposure and lack of sun protection. Pigmentation like melasma can be attributed to hormonal imbalances such as during pregnancy.
